Renovation and Design Tips

Lighting: among the main things to consider when renovating or constructing a new kitchen. While lots of folks go with recessed lighting in their kitchen, Gambrel urges surface-mount fixtures that are attached to a ceiling onto a grid:"The bulb is below the height of the ceiling, which means you get a more light and it is not quite as surgical as recessed lighting. In addition, it is very beautiful." He also loves hanging larger light fixtures over islands, yet another practical decorative prospect. And remember that cabinets can block light from falling onto your countertops" Planning for a few under-cabinet lighting is critical," Tom adds. "Make sure that you have a switch and a few power outlets dedicated to this." Cabinets are merely cabinets, right? Wrong! They're another chance to inject your style and create your cooking process more efficient. By way of example, you may want to forgo cabinet doors completely. "I can see everything, and make it more trendy that way, and that I can arrange olive oil and spices in a more artful way." Gambrel also notes that an open cabinet can easily transform the soul of your kitchen, which makes it more airy and interesting.

Cabinets are merely cabinets, right?

"Nothing gets trapped at the back if you can pull out a large pile of pans as opposed to crouching down, reaching back, and pulling everything out," she says. "It is just easier to load and unload." Another thing those deep towels are great for? Garbage and recycling, which should go near your sink.

When you talk sinks, you have gotta talk dishwashers." Your dishwasher needs to be on the right of the sink because the majority of individuals are right-handed," explains Tom. Clearly, if you are left-handed, switch your dishwasher position for simplicity. "You should also have counter area to the right of your sink" You know, so you don't need to balance that pile of dirty dishes, your pots and pans, along with your delicate wine glasses all in your sink
The arrangement between the sink, the refrigerator, and the range should form an equilateral triangle should you map them out." When you are cooking, these are the three factors of the kitchen you will be repeatedly seeing, so it is ideal to get them more or less equidistant to each other. And Tom-recommends thinking even more about your triangle:"I always love to consider the view from either the stove or the sink," she says. "If somebody prefers to tackle their guests from the adjoining space while cooking, it is ideal to put the range at a position where they can talk to people while they are cooking." Same is true for somebody who sees themselves spending more time in the sink. "Then the triangle is planned out there," she says.
Both designers feel that if you replace and update just 1 item in your kitchen, let your cooker be that thing. Stoves come in a plethora of styles and colours, giving you a range (heh, heh) of choices. Also think about getting a hood to your range--an addition that'll help with ventilation and make an impression. "If you've got a large budget, you can have one made in metal such as nickel or bronze," Gambrel states. "Otherwise, you can purchase a hood with your cooker, then have your contractor build a framework around it in plaster or stucco. It would be great for any kitchen."
"Countertops will need to be 24 or 25 inches, and it is ideal to get a little bit of an overhang, so dripping tomato sauce will fall onto your floor rather than on your cabinets," Tom says. Even besides their purpose, countertops are a massive area of the kitchen, and they ought to align with your own style. "Solid surfacing like Corian is very good," she says. "They can be repaired and they can be set up in such a manner that no leftover food can be stuck in the seams." "It wears obviously, and there is something amazing about that because it is a pure material. Hundred-year-old marble counters in a classic Italian-villa kitchen--there is nothing like that attractiveness. You can see, after 100 years, where folks have been working on this counter."

Besides thinking about your physical cooker, you have got to consider the region around your stove, also. "It's always great to have space on each side of your range so that you can have easy access to prep and provides," Tom says.
Don't Get Just Any Old Floors
"I love sinks which are broad and deep," Gambrel states. "I believe the white-porcelain farmhouse sink is a really terrific solution." The main part of your sink to consider, however, is the faucet. "You will need to have the ability to flip back and forth really fast, with a dirty pan in one of your hands. For those who get a water-mixing valve on your faucet, you can do this in one motion." Whether you've got one of these pull-out spray nozzles or another nozzle into the side of your faucet is entirely your choice.
A low-hanging lighting fixture will produce optimal lighting as you're cooking.

Consider Sinks

"I personally feel that a rock floor is ideal for durability," Gambrel states. "But if you are a cook, it is a lot more comfortable to stand on timber or Ipocork." For her Home, <chrome_find class="find_in_page">Roberts goes for tile" Italian ceramic tiles are completely indestructible. With bigger tiles, you have hardly any seams--a problem area that traps little pieces of food that fall on the floor. And--get this--Italian ceramic tiles are really cheap. Score! "If you can, while you're at it, set a radiant tile heater beneath those tiles," suggests <chrome_find class="find_in_page">Roberts.
Contemplate Your Countertops...
An exhaust hood to your stove will help ventilate your kitchen as you're using it--a critical function.
